IQALUIT, Nunavut (June 6, 2019) - The Legislative Assembly today approved a motion recommending that Ms. Marilyn Jane Bates be appointed Nunavut’s new Representative for Children and Youth. The motion was unanimously adopted by the House.

The territorial Representative for Children and Youth Act provides that the Representative holds office for a five-year term. The appointment of Ms. Bates is effective July 22, 2019.

In January of this year, the Management and Services Board of the Legislative Assembly publicly invited applications for the position of Representative for Children and Youth.

Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Simeon Mikkungwak said, “Ms. Bates has been a child protection and family services professional for a quarter of a century, and brings close to two decades of experience in the North to the position of Representative for Children and Youth.”

Speaker Mikkungwak added, “On behalf of our institution, I would like to acknowledge Ms. Sherry McNeil-Mulak for her service as Nunavut’s first Representative for Children and Youth and to thank her for helping to ensure a smooth transition for her successor.”
