Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Announces Designation of Languages Commissioner

IQALUIT, Nunavut (February 3, 2020) - Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Simeon Mikkungwak today announced that Ms. Karliin Aariak has been designated to serve as the Languages Commissioner of Nunavut.

Under the Official Languages Act, the Languages Commissioner of Nunavut is appointed on the recommendation of the Legislative Assembly for a five-year term of office.

Speaker Mikkungwak said, “The Management and Services Board undertook a competitive selection process for the position. Ms. Aariak, who has been serving as Acting Languages Commissioner since October of 2019, has a strong record of advocacy for language rights.”

A formal motion to confirm the appointment will be made when the Legislative Assembly reconvenes on February 18, 2020, for its winter sitting.

Biographical Note

Karliin Aariak

Karliin Aariak a graduate of Nunavut Arctic College. Her professional experience includes positions as Reporter/Editor, Host and Producer for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Senior Policy Analyst for Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, Investigations Officer for the Office of the Languages Commissioner of Nunavut, Terminologist for the Inuit Uqausinginnik Taiguusiliuqtiit (Inuit Language Authority) and Acting Executive Director for the Inuit Uqausinginnik Taiguusiliuqtiit. Ms. Aariak is a past Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of the TV Nunavut Educational Broadcast Society, a former member of the Board of Directors of the Tumikuluit Saipaaqivik Daycare, a former member of the Ajjiit Nunavut Media Association, a former member of the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce and a former member of the Iqaluit District Education Authority.
