Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Mourns the Passing of Former MLA Louis Tapardjuk

IQALUIT, Nunavut (April 7, 2026) - Speaker David Joanasie today issued the following statement:

“As Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, I extend my deepest condolences to the family of Louis Tapardjuk, who passed away earlier today. Mr. Tapardjuk represented the constituency of Amittuq during the 2^nd and 3^rd Legislative Assemblies. Mr. Tapardjuk’s distinguished career included service as a member of the Executive Council of Nunavut, Mayor of Igloolik and Chair of the Board of Directors of the Inuit Uqausinginnik Taiguusiliuqtiit. Mr. Tapardjuk was a life-long advocate for Inuit rights and language. On behalf of all Members of the Legislative Assembly, we extend our condolences to his family.”

The community flag of Igloolik will be half-masted at the Legislative Assembly Precinct in honour of his passing.
