IQALUIT, Nunavut (June 13, 2022) - Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and Chairperson of the Order of Nunavut Advisory Council Tony Akoak today announced that Maryanne Inuaraq Tattuinee and Dorothy Atuat Tootoo of Rankin Inlet will be this year’s recipients of the Order of Nunavut.
On January 1, 2010, the Order of Nunavut Act came into force. The objective of the Order is to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the territory. The Order is the highest honour of Nunavut and takes precedence over all other orders, decorations or medals conferred by the Government of Nunavut.
Maryanne Inuaraq Tattuinee is a respected Elder who has provided counselling and guidance to generations of young people. Ms. Tattuinee is renowned for the aid and comfort that she provided to Inuit receiving treatment for tuberculosis at the Clearwater Lake Sanatorium during the 1950s. Ms. Tattuinee participated in the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
Dorothy Atuat Tootoo’s career has included significant roles with Nunavut Arctic College and the Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps. Ms. Tootoo is a long-time community volunteer who has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Governor General’s Polar Medal.
“This year’s recipients of the Order of Nunavut are inspiring women whose contributions and service have made a profound difference in the lives of countless Nunavummiut,” said Speaker Akoak.
The investiture ceremonies for Mses. Tattuinee and Tootoo will be held during the fall 2022 sitting of the Legislative Assembly on a date to be announced.
