Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Mourns the Passing of Former MLA Joe Arlooktoo

IQALUIT, Nunavut (January 6, 2026) - Speaker David Joanasie today issued the following statement:

“As Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, I extend my deepest condolences to the family of Joe Arlooktoo, who recently passed away. Mr. Arlooktoo represented the constituency of Baffin South in the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories prior to division in 1999. Mr. Arlooktoo was a former Mayor of Kimmirut and well-respected community leader and artist. On behalf of all Members of the Legislative Assembly, we extend our condolences to his family.”

The community flag of  Kimmirut will be half-masted at the Legislative Assembly Precinct in honour of his passing.
