Standing Committee Announces Schedule for Televised Hearings on Bill 25

IQALUIT, Nunavut (November 8, 2019) - The Legislative Assembly’s Standing Committee on Legislation today announced the schedule for its upcoming televised hearings on Bill 25, the proposed Act to Amend the Education Act and the Inuit Language Protection Act.

“Our standing committee’s televised hearings will provide an excellent opportunity for Nunavummiut across the territory to follow our deliberations as we give careful consideration to this important Bill,” said Committee Chairperson John Main, MLA for Arviat North-Whale Cove. “My colleagues and I again thank all Nunavummiut who took the time to provide input on Bill 25, and we look forward to a productive dialogue between the standing committee, the sponsoring Minister and the key stakeholders who have been invited to appear before us.”

The standing committee’s televised hearings will take place in the Chamber of the Legislative Assembly beginning at 09:00am on Monday, November 25, 2019. The hearings are scheduled to conclude at 12:00pm on Thursday, November 28, 2019. Invitations to appear before the standing committee have been extended to the following:

• Minister of Education;
• Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated;
• Coalition of Nunavut District Education Authorities;
• Qikiqtani Inuit Association;
• Kivalliq Inuit Association;
• Kitikmeot Inuit Association;
• Iqaluit District Education Authority;
• Arviat District Education Authority;
• Gjoa Haven District Education Authority;
• Nunavut Teachers’ Association;
• Office of the Languages Commissioner of Nunavut; and
• Office of the Representative for Children and Youth.

The hearings will be televised on local community cable stations and direct-to-home satellite service on the Bell (channel 513) and Shaw (channel 289 - classic / channel 489 - new lineup) networks. The hearings will also be live-streamed at: http://video.isilive.ca/nunavut/.
