IQALUIT, Nunavut (September 9, 2013) - The Legislative Assembly today approved a motion recommending that the Honourable J.E. (Ted) Richard be appointed Integrity Commissioner of Nunavut. The motion was unanimously adopted by the House.
The territorial Integrity Act provides that the Integrity Commissioner holds office for a five-year term. The appointment of the present Integrity Commissioner expires on September 9, 2013. Mr. Richard’s appointment is effective September 10, 2013.
In June of this year, the Management and Services Board of the Legislative Assembly publicly invited applications for the position of Integrity Commissioner.
Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Hunter Tootoo said, “A number of exceptionally well-qualified individuals from across Canada expressed interest in serving as Nunavut’s Integrity Commissioner. Mr. Richard’s experience as a former jurist and legislator in the North is unparalleled.”
In 2010, the Legislative Assembly appointed Mr. Richard to serve as the Chairperson of the Nunavut Electoral Boundaries Commission. Mr. Richard previously served as the Chairperson of the 1997 Electoral Boundaries Commission.
Speaker Tootoo added, “My colleagues and I would also like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to Mr. Norman Pickell for his service to Nunavut.”
