IQALUIT, Nunavut (November 20, 2018) - The Honourable Joe Enook, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut, today announced that the 7th Speaker’s Youth Parliament will be televised live across the territory on Thursday, November 22, 2018, at 1:30pm (EST).
The proceedings of the biennial Youth Parliament will be held in the Chamber of the Legislative Assembly and will be open to the public to observe from the Visitors’ Gallery. The Youth Parliament will be televised on local community cable stations and direct-to-home satellite service on the Bell (channel 513) and Shaw (channel 289 – classic / channel 489 – new lineup) networks.
The Honourable David Joanasie, MLA for South Baffin, will appear before the Youth Parliament to answer students’ questions concerning initiatives under his Ministerial jurisdiction. Minister Joanasie’s portfolios include Education, Languages and Culture and Heritage.
“Students who participate in this event learn about the Parliamentary process while experiencing the challenge of assuming the role of an elected Member of the Legislative Assembly,” said Speaker Enook. “I invite all Nunavummiut to tune in and watch tomorrow’s leaders at work in your House.”
This year’s Youth Parliamentarians are enrolled in high schools from across Nunavut. Students who were selected to represent Nunavut’s twenty-two constituencies submitted applications to participate in the Youth Parliament through their respective schools.
