Standing Committee on Legislation Announces Next Steps in Consideration of Bill 25

IQALUIT, Nunavut (September 25, 2019) - The Standing Committee on Legislation today announced the next steps in its consideration of Bill 25, An Act to Amend the Education Act and the Inuit Language Protection Act. Bill 25 was introduced by the Minister of Education on June 4, 2019, and was subsequently referred to the standing committee for consideration.

Standing Committee Chair John Main said, “My colleagues and I wish to express our appreciation to Nunavummiut who have taken the time to share their views on this important Bill. The standing committee is giving careful consideration to all input, and welcomes further submissions from interested residents and organizations up until 5:00pm on Friday, October 11, 2019. The submissions will be made public through tabling in the House during its upcoming fall sitting.”

The fall 2019 sitting of the 2nd Session of the 5th Legislative Assembly will commence at 1:30pm on Thursday, October 17, 2019.

Chairman Main said, “The standing committee will seek an extension to its review period during the sitting, which will allow us to hold televised hearings on Bill 25 during the last two weeks of November. The Minister of Education and invited witnesses will appear before the standing committee at the hearings, which will provide Nunavummiut across the territory with the opportunity to observe our deliberations.”

A detailed schedule for the standing committee’s hearings and list of invited witnesses will be issued at a later date.
