Advisory Council Announces Appointment to the Order of Nunavut

IQALUIT, Nunavut (September 28, 2020) - Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and Chairperson of the Order of Nunavut Advisory Council Paul Quassa today announced that Mr. Peter Tapatai will be this year’s recipient of the Order of Nunavut.

On January 1, 2010, The Order of Nunavut Act came into force. The objective of the Order is to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the territory. The Order is the highest honour of Nunavut and takes precedence over all other orders, decorations or medals conferred by the Government of Nunavut.

Mr. Tapatai is a successful businessperson with a distinguished record of public service. Mr. Tapatai has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal. Mr. Tapatai is the founder of Peter’s Expediting Ltd. in Baker Lake and is renowned for his work with the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation, including the creation of the iconic character “Super Shamou.”

“This year’s recipient of the Order of Nunavut is well-known throughout the territory for his commitment to sustainable community economic development, Inuit entrepreneurship and cultural pride,” said Speaker Quassa.

The investiture ceremony for Mr. Tapatai will be held at a later date to be announced.
