Auditor General of Canada to Appear Before Standing Committee

IQALUIT, Nunavut (March 25, 2014) - The Auditor General of Canada, Mr. Michael Ferguson, will appear before the Legislative Assembly’s Standing Committee on Oversight of Government Operations and Public Accounts at 1:30pm on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, on the occasion of the Standing Committee’s hearings on the reports of the Auditor General to the Legislative Assembly on Education in Nunavut and Safety of Schools and Childcare Facilities in Nunavut. The hearings will be held from April 1-3, 2014.

2014 Nominations Open for the Order of Nunavut

IQALUIT, Nunavut (March 17, 2014) - Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and Chairperson of the Order of Nunavut Advisory Council George Qulaut today announced that nominations have re-opened for the Order of Nunavut. On January 1, 2010, The Order of Nunavut Act came into force. The objective of the Order is to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the cultural, social or economic well-being of Nunavut. The Order is the highest honour of Nunavut and takes precedence over all other orders, decorations or medals conferred by the Government of Nunavut.

MLA for Uqqummiut Disciplined for Absences

IQALUIT, Nunavut (November 20, 2013) - The Honourable George Qulaut, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and Chairperson of the Management and Services Board, today announced that Samuel Nuqingaq, Member for Uqqummiut, has been disciplined for having been absent from two days of the orientation program for newly-elected Members, in addition to the morning proceedings of the Nunavut Leadership Forum, which was held on November 15, 2013.

MLAs announce date and format of Nunavut Leadership Forum

IQALUIT, Nunavut (November 8, 2013) - The Legislative Assembly’s Caucus today announced the date and format for the 2013 Nunavut Leadership Forum. The Forum consists of all MLAs.

The Forum will be held in the Chamber of the Legislative Assembly, beginning at 10:00am on Friday, November 15, 2013. The proceedings will be open to the public to observe from the Visitors’ Gallery. The proceedings will be televised live across Nunavut on the Legislative Assembly’s cable broadcast channel.

Order of Nunavut Investiture Ceremony to be held on September 12, 2013

IQALUIT, Nunavut (September 10, 2013) - Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and Chairperson of the Order of Nunavut Advisory Council Hunter Tootoo today announced that Messrs. Jimmy Akavak, Louis Angalik, Sr. and Davidee Arnakak will be invested into the Order of Nunavut at a ceremony to be held on Thursday, September 12, 2013, at 5:00pm in the Chamber of the Legislative Assembly.

The investiture ceremony will be open to the public to observe and will be televised live across Nunavut on the Legislative Assembly’s cable broadcast channel.

Legislative Assembly Recommends Appointment of New Integrity Commissioner of Nunavut

IQALUIT, Nunavut (September 9, 2013) - The Legislative Assembly today approved a motion recommending that the Honourable J.E. (Ted) Richard be appointed Integrity Commissioner of Nunavut. The motion was unanimously adopted by the House.

The territorial Integrity Act provides that the Integrity Commissioner holds office for a five-year term. The appointment of the present Integrity Commissioner expires on September 9, 2013. Mr. Richard’s appointment is effective September 10, 2013.

Nunavut and Northwest Territories Speakers Welcome CRTC Decision Concerning Mandatory Carriage of Legislative Proceedings

IQALUIT, Nunavut and YELLOWKNIFE, Northwest Territories (August 8, 2013) – Speakers Hunter Tootoo and Jackie Jacobson today welcomed the decision of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to require mandatory carriage of the legislatures’ televised proceedings on the digital basic service of the direct-to-home satellite broadcasting distribution undertakings serving Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.
