IQALUIT, Nunavut (September 13, 2018) - The Legislative Assembly’s Standing Committee on Oversight of Government Operations and Public Accounts (OGOPA) will hold televised hearings from September 27, 2018, to October 2, 2018, on the most recent annual reports and corporate plans of the Qulliq Energy Corporation and the Legal Services Board. All Regular Members of the Legislative Assembly serve on the standing committee.
The Qulliq Energy Corporation’s appearance before the standing committee begins at 1:30pm on Thursday, September 27, 2018. “The standing committee’s recent televised hearing on the Auditor General of Canada’s report to the Legislative Assembly on the issue of climate change in Nunavut provided an opportunity for elected MLAs to consider the QEC’s progress in the area of renewable energy,” said Committee Co-Chairperson John Main, MLA for Arviat North-Whale Cove. “Our upcoming hearing will allow for further detailed examination of the corporation’s operations in a variety of areas.”
The Legal Services Board’s appearance before the standing committee begins at 1:30pm on Monday, October 1, 2018. “The Government of Nunavut’s 2018-2019 main estimates include approximately $11.8 million in direct public funding for the Legal Services Board,” said Mr. Main. “The standing committee’s upcoming televised hearing will mark the first time that the Board’s leadership has been invited to account to elected MLAs in this manner for the entity’s activities, expenditures and initiatives in such areas as enhancing access to justice for Nunavummiut.”
The standing committee’s televised hearings will take place in the Chamber of the Legislative Assembly and will be open for the public to observe. The hearings will be televised on local community cable stations and direct-to-home satellite service on the Bell (channel 513) and Shaw (channel 289 – classic / channel 489 – new lineup) networks.
