Legislative Assembly Recommends Appointment of Integrity Commissioner of Nunavut

IQALUIT, Nunavut (October 23, 2018) - The Legislative Assembly today approved a motion recommending that Ms. Katherine Peterson, Q.C., be appointed Integrity Commissioner of Nunavut. The motion was unanimously adopted by the House.

The territorial Integrity Act provides that the Integrity Commissioner holds office for a five-year term. Ms. Peterson’s appointment is effective immediately.

In June of this year, the Management and Services Board of the Legislative Assembly publicly invited applications for the position of Integrity Commissioner.

Nunavut and Northwest Territories Speakers Welcome CRTC Decision To Renew Order Concerning Broadcast of Legislative Proceedings

IQALUIT, Nunavut and YELLOWKNIFE, Northwest Territories (August 22, 2018) - Speakers Joe Enook and Jackson Lafferty today welcomed the decision of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to renew the mandatory distribution order for the broadcast services of the Nunavut and Northwest Territories legislatures. The renewal has been granted without an expiry date.

Nunavut Leadership Forum elects Premier and Cabinet Minister

IQALUIT, Nunavut (June 14, 2018) - A new Premier and Member of the Executive Council were chosen today by the Nunavut Leadership Forum. The Forum consists of all MLAs.

Joe Savikataaq, MLA for Arviat South, was elected as Premier.

George Hickes, MLA for Iqaluit-Tasiluk, was elected to serve on the Executive Council.

The Legislative Assembly and Executive Council Act provides that the Premier has the prerogative to assign Ministerial portfolios.

Formal motions to confirm the appointments will be made when the House reconvenes later this evening.

Standing Committee Announces Televised Hearing on the Report of the Auditor General of Canada to the Legislative Assembly on Climate Change in Nunavut

IQALUIT, Nunavut (April 3, 2018) - The Legislative Assembly’s Standing Committee on Oversight of Government Operations and Public Accounts today announced that its televised hearing on the 2018 Report of the Auditor General of Canada to the Legislative Assembly on Climate Change in Nunavut will be held from April 30, 2018-May 1, 2018.

Advisory Council Announces Appointments to the Order of Nunavut

IQALUIT, Nunavut (March 19, 2018) - Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and Chairperson of the Order of Nunavut Advisory Council Joe Enook today announced that Betty Brewster and Ludy Pudluk will be this year’s recipients of the Order of Nunavut.

On January 1, 2010, The Order of Nunavut Act came into force. The objective of the Order is to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the territory. The Order is the highest honour of Nunavut and takes precedence over all other orders, decorations or medals conferred by the Government of Nunavut.
