IQALUIT, Nunavut (November 8, 2019) - The Legislative Assembly’s Standing Committee on Legislation today announced the schedule for its upcoming televised hearings on Bill 25, the proposed Act to Amend the Education Act and the Inuit Language Protection Act.

Applications are invited for the position of Languages Commissioner of Nunavut. This is a five-year, full-time statutory appointment.

The Languages Commissioner is an Independent Officer of the Legislative Assembly. The office-holder is appointed on the recommendation of the Legislative Assembly, pursuant to the Official Languages Act. The position exercises a range of powers and responsibilities under the Official Languages Act and the Inuit Language Protection Act. IQALUIT, Nunavut (September 25, 2019) - The Standing Committee on Legislation today announced the next steps in its consideration of Bill 25, An Act to Amend the Education Act and the Inuit Language Protection Act. Bill 25 was introduced by the Minister of Education on June 4, 2019, and was subsequently referred to the standing committee for consideration.

YELLOWKNIFE, Northwest Territories and IQALUIT, Nunavut (July 2, 2019) - Speakers Jackson Lafferty and Simeon Mikkungwak today mourn the passing of former MLA Ludy Pudluk, who passed away on Monday following a long illness.
 
Ludy Pudluk served as a Member of the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly from 1975 to 1995. During his tenure in public office, Mr. Pudluk represented the communities of the High Arctic and was instrumental in the movement that led to the creation of Nunavut.
 

IQALUIT, Nunavut (June 6, 2019) - The Legislative Assembly today approved a motion recommending that Ms. Marilyn Jane Bates be appointed Nunavut’s new Representative for Children and Youth. The motion was unanimously adopted by the House.

The territorial Representative for Children and Youth Act provides that the Representative holds office for a five-year term. The appointment of Ms. Bates is effective July 22, 2019.
